Questions we regularly get asked by Customers
We pride ourselves on offering a high level of customer service and are on hand to answer any questions. Here are some of the most common questions we get asked. If you can’t find the answer you need, take a look at our full list of FAQs or give our friendly team a call.
Polytunnels put you in control of nature, allowing you to create microclimates and extend the growing season. With the development of new polythene covers, you can grow all kinds of crops and exotic plants in a polytunnel. Strawberries, tomatoes and even chillies can flourish under cover – even in cooler UK weather.
An estimated 80% of British strawberries are grown in polytunnels. Many award-winning flowers and record-breaking vegetables are also grown this way. So, if you choose one of our polytunnels for sale, you can enjoy homegrown crops and healthy, cost-effective meals all year round.
Want tips, tricks and ideas for growing in polytunnels? Check out our range of growing guides. We have guides for a wide selection of vegetables and fruits, as well as herbs and spices.
Originally developed as a cost-effective, more flexible and easier-to-install alternative to greenhouses, polytunnels have continued to develop and advance over the years. Today, they're the first choice for growing under in countries throughout the world.
Polytunnels allow you to grow plants that might not normally survive in your local environment. They provide your produce with extra shelter against adverse weather conditions and the changing of the seasons. For these reasons, avid gardeners and commercial growers alike will tell you that they can't manage without them.
Polytunnels are versatile and can be used for a wide range of extra uses. They're particularly popular as educational spaces for schools, for horticultural therapy for charities, and as sheep shelters for farmers. Some of our customers use them as community hubs, dog training arenas, and wedding venues!
It is important to remember when comparing prices that “you only get what you pay for”. The tunnels available on auction websites or pre-packed on the shelves of garden centres for around £100 are only suitable to be used as temporary covers for short periods of time on sheltered sites; they will not stand up to being placed on a permanent site because of the lack of structural stability and the unsuitable polythene covers.
“Real” polytunnels vary in price depending on what is included in a standard kit, for example; the size of steel hoops, the type of polythene cover and doors/end frames, VAT, and delivery charges – Always check before you buy and don’t miss those extra charges!
There is no such thing as a "like for like" comparison with a 'Premier' polytunnel – The quality and materials of our polytunnels cannot be matched.
Before buying your polytunnel, measure the space you have available. Make sure you allow for a few feet around the structure, so you have space to access it at the initial building stage and to carry out maintenance throughout the years.
You should also consider what you're growing and how much you're growing. If you want to grow a variety of crops or crops in large quantities, choose a suitable size to accommodate this.
Take a look at our detailed sizing guide here.
You can construct your own polytunnel, ideally with a friend or family member helping. A domestic polytunnel really is a two-person job, whereas a large commercial polytunnel may need extra pairs of helping hands when it's time to fit the cover.
The basic steps are to check you have the necessary tools, carry out a general site clearance, dig the holes, construct the steel and timber framework, and pull the polythene cover over.
To make things easier, we provide you with detailed construction guides to follow, and answer frequently asked construction questions, while our construction helpline on 01282 811250 is open seven days a week until 9pm. We also have a full collection of construction videos on our YouTube channel.
